The Mechanical Assembler is responsible for the assembly, fitting, and basic testing of mechanical components and equipment used in wastewater treatment plants. This entry-level position supports the fabrication and installation of equipment such as screens, conveyors, compactors, mixers, and related mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Assembly and Installation • Assemble mechanical components and sub-assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, general arrangement (GA) drawings, and work instructions • Fit, align, and secure mechanical parts including shafts, bearings, gearboxes, chains, and fasteners • Assist with the installation of wastewater treatment equipment such as mechanical screens, screw conveyors, grit removal systems, mixers, and compactors • Use hand tools and basic power tools safely and effectively
Quality and Compliance • Ensure assemblies meet required dimensional tolerances and functional requirements • Perform basic visual inspections and report defects or non-conformances • Follow company quality procedures and workmanship standards • Assist with factory acceptance testing (FAT) and basic functional checks
Safety and Housekeeping • Comply with all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work area • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses to supervisors
Documentation and Reporting • Read and interpret basic mechanical drawings and assembly instructions • Complete basic job cards, checklists, and assembly records • Communicate progress, delays, or technical issues to supervisors
Team Support • Work under the supervision of senior assemblers, fitters, or foremen • Assist other team members as required to meet production schedules • Participate in on-the-job training and skills development initiatives
Minimum Requirements
Education and Skills • Grade 12 / Matric (or equivalent) • Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in mechanical assembly • Ability to read basic mechanical drawings • Familiarity with hand tools and workshop practices
Experience • workshop or technical exposure is advantageous
Personal Attributes • Willingness to learn and follow instructions • Attention to detail and commitment to quality • Physically fit and capable of manual work • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious
Working Conditions • Workshop and site-based work at wastewater treatment facilities
